Berry: Popular NSW Weekend Destination

Being the most northern town in the Shoalhaven region of NSW, Berry acts as a gateway from Sydney on the Princes Highway and from Canberra through Kangaroo Valley. A historical town dating back to 1825, it has retained much of its charm. In and around the town there are National Trust Heritage buildings, which add to its historical interest for visitors.

With its variety of choice available in accommodation and central location on the South Coast, it makes Berry an ideal spot to explore the rest of the region. There is a lot to see and experience here, nearby are idyllic beaches, scenic national parks and state reserves, rivers and estuaries and green valleys. See the South Coast Map.

Many artists and artisans have made the South Coast their home, you can see their works in the many art galleries and markets, usually held on weekends. Collectors come from afar to find bargains, the Berry Market is held on the first Sunday of every month.

Berry Historic Museum

At the Berry Historic Museum there are displays, artefacts and exhibits that relate to the history of the area. Berry has historical buildings with heritage protection, green gardens and a number of antique shops worth exploring.

The main areas in town had been planted by the earlier settlers with Oaks, Elms and Beech trees to remind them of England. Many are still there today.

Food and Wines

You can find is a good mix of restaurants and cafes that cater for the needs of visitors and locals alike, they emphasize using the freshest local ingredients from the Shoalhaven Region. There are a number of speciality gourmet shops to round off the experience. Local cheeses and delicacies are a speciality.

At the the town’s old butter factory, you can see jams and confectionary being made. Try some!

South Coast Wineries

In the surrounds of Berry, there are a number of wineries that have cellar doors. Woodhill Mountain Wines, The Silos Estate, Jasper Valley Wines and Cambewarra Estate Winery are all within short driving distance.

Also not far from Berry, at the Coolangatta Estate Historic Village & Winery there is a restored village, originally built by convicts in the early 19th Century. The restaurant at the village also serves cuisine made from the local produce, their wines - also available at the winery’s cellar door, have all been grown here.

All along the South Coast, from Shoalhaven to the Sapphire Coast, you can find interesting wineries scattered inland along the countryside, many with cellar doors and a number of them with gourmet restaurants.
