State Library of Victoria - Melbourne Landmark

This Melbourne landmark has a purpose - It encourages for people of all ages the enjoyment of literature with special exhibitions through the year. Victorian photography, prints, drawings, the decorative arts and fashion are all explored with everchanging exhibits.

Part of the attraction of this building as a landmark is the octagonal glass dome which covers the main reading room, added to the library in 1913. Lining the octagon are displays including science, literature, culture, old world maps, even a working model of Ned Kelly’s armour and an exhibit about his life and death. Photo of Glass Roof.

Opening Times

Open from Monday to Thursday, 10 am to 9 pm. Friday to Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm, with some parts of the Library having different opening hours. Closed Good Fridays, Christmas Day and Boxing Days and New Year’s Day.
