Melbourne Australia CBD - Town Hall

Built in 1867 and paid for by the Victoria Gold Rush, this regal building has stood for more than 135 years. Historical events have taken place here, from the earliest debates about Federation of Australia to shows by the Beatles.

Designed by the architectural company run by Joseph Reed and completed in 1870, the portico was added later in 1887. In 1908 the second chamber was built with a Renaissance style interior. The ceiling features gum nuts as part of the Australian motifs found here and other parts of the building.

There are tours available of the Town Hall, highlighting the history, architecture and political events that happened here. Noteworthy at the Town Hall is the Grand Organ, the wood panelled Council Chamber and the Clock Tower.

The grand halls are now used to host key events, exhibitions, weddings and theatrical shows.

Swanston Street Precinct

The building is one the key buildings in the Swanston Street Precinct, an area between Flinders Street and La Trobe Street that is now for pedestrians till 7pm at night.
