The site was originally the site for the Melbourne General Cemetery, used from 1837 to 1887. Initially, only three graves were removed from the site, but the resultant controversy was not to settle down as the needs of the market outgrew its size and a further 10,000 graves were removed by an act of Parliament in 1917.

The market today attracts well over 100,000 shoppers and bargain hunters per week, it becomes particularly active on weekends, making it a great time to visit. You can buy the freshest of meat, fish, fruit and vegetables from over 1,000 stalls. There is a massive choice of deli products from Australia and overseas as well as wines and organic products.
