This statue of Queen Victoria just north of Hyde Park has seen many activists and political movements come and go. Close to parliament, it has been the gathering site of many demonstrations over the years.

In the background of the photo is St. James Church, then a courthouse with the King St. Tram heading into the city centre (Ocean Street Tram on return trip).

This tramline ran all the way from Watson’s Bay along South Head Road to Erskine St., near Wynyard train station in the city.

Heritage List buildings by Queens Square include the Sydney Mint (previously Sydney’s first hospital) the Hyde Park Barracks and St. James Church.
