Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania

Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair are located in the Tasmanian World Heritage Area, a beautiful and unique wilderness region. This pristine area occupies about twenty percent of Tasmania’s land mass and is one of Australia’s largest natural reserves.

You can explore this region with the many trails that have been established, including to the top of Cradle Mountain. Some 1,545m in height, there is a 6 to 7 hour hike involved to get to its summit. Cradle Mountain also marks the beginning of the Overland Track, an 65 kilometre trek that takes you through stunning wilderness mountain scenery and ends at Cynthia Bay on St Clair lake.

Lake St Clair is the deepest lake in Australia, having been formed by successive ice ages over the last 2 million years. The surrounding pristine forests has numerous walks and places to stay overnight.

Being on the south side of Tasmania, one needs to be aware of the weather conditions that can change very quickly. At the Lake St Clair visitor centre you can get tourist information about camping, trails, park ecology, safety and displays about how this deep lake formed.
