An inlaid decorative mosaic floor flows past traditional tearooms, antique jewellery and designer fashion stores.
City Arcades
Arcades became popular in the 19th Century as a way to allow for more shops in a given area while giving protection from the elements and the busy muddy streets for shoppers. The Block Arcade itself is classified by the National Trust.
The Block Arcade
The building itself, completed in 1893 after a fire destroyed the Grain Store that existed here is protected by both the National Trust and the Victorian Heritage Register. It was restored in 1988, complete with the Hopetoun Tearooms that were there from the beginning.
The beautiful glass roof canopy and Victorian wrought iron, mixed with the elegant carved stone finishings and mosaic tiled flooring makes it one of Australia’s most beautiful arcades in existence today.
It was very much of the Melbourne scene to be seen here on weekends in the 19th Century and the earlier parts of the 20th, people would comment they were going to do “the Block.”
