Melbourne’s tram and light rail network is the 4th largest in the world. There are more than 135 miles of double track carrying trains through the city and out through the suburbs.
You can purchase pre-paid tickets or travel cards. These are readily available at The Met Shop which has outlets in the city and the suburbs at news stands and convenience stores.
Short trip and two hour tickets can be purchased from machines on the trains. Tickets are interchangeable for use on trams, buses or rail service.
An enjoyable way to explore Melbourne city centre - Sit back and relax as you ride the historic rambuncle 1920s trams. The special burgundy trams depart every 20 minutes seven days a week from 10.00am to 4.00pm. The trams run along Flinders St, Spring St, Latrobe St and Spencer Street, circling Melbourne CBD. If you start your journey and end it within the city Central Business Distric limits, you can now travel for free on any tram, but you will find it hard to beat the historic ones.
