Killcare, Central Coast NSW

Map: Central Coast Map NSW.

Killcare on the coast of New South Wales has managed to retain its historical village ambience, with Pretty Beach on its ocean side and a marina on its bay side. Great for fishing, exploring the Bouddi National Park and just generally relaxing.

When visiting Sydney, the Central Coast is only 1.5 hours drive north, making it an ideal place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

There is a variety of places to stay here on this part of the Central Coast, ranging from beautiful ocean resorts to two star budget quality motels, as well as luxury beachside homes. Note, during holidays and long weekends, it is wise to book ahead.

Beaches

Pretty Beach, on the bay, is patrolled by lifesafers as is Killcare Beach, an oceanside beach which faces towards the Sydney North Shore Beaches. Another patrolled beach is Macmasters, also with a surf life saving club. Tallow Beach, located in the Bouddi National Park, is also an ocean beach.

Both Putty Beach, on the north end of Killcare Beach and Little Beach, in northern section of Bouddi, have picnic areas with appropriate facilities.

Bouddi National Park

Bouddi National Park, one of the first declared marine protected parks in the country has a number of significant Aboriginal heritage sites as they occupied this region for many thousands of years. There are cliffs with stupendous views, particularly on the Box Head Track and on the walk to Tallow Beach.

Camping is available in the park, while numerous trails can take you to the various points of interest. Putty Beach has eighteen sites for camping with facilities as well as a picnic area. Phone +061 2 4320 4203 for permits and more information.

Note: Fishing is not allowed from Bombi Point to Gerrin Point as it is part of the protected marine section of the park.

Walks

The Bouddi Coastal Walk has amazing views with interesting rock formations, taking you past Putty Beach, Maitland Bay, Little Beach and then to Macmasters Beach.

The Box Head Walking Track gives far reaching views of the surrounding area, the dramatic views of the outlet of the Hawkesbury River to the ocean, the bays and all the way to the beaches on the Sydney North Shore.

Mountain Biking

There are plenty of places to explore with your mountain bike. Strom Loop takes you Dingeldei picnic area, while the Rocky Point ride takes you to the Allen Strom Lookout.

Getting to Killcare

The drive from Sydney is normally quick. Take the F3 expressway from North Sydney to the turn-off for Gosford, then on to the Pacific Highway (M1). From there you can take Woy Woy Rd and Empire Bay Drive to Ward Hills Road in the Killcare Heights.

Something different, you can take day trips to Killcare from Palm Beach via the ferry service at the Palm Beach Ferry service.
