West of Sydney and the Blue Mountains, Oberon is situated between Bathurst to the northwest and Goulburn to the south. Nearby are the Jenolan Caves, the Kanangra-Boyd National Park and the Blue Mountains National Park. Another attraction to Oberon is Lake Oberon, known for its fishing.

At Oberon, in the NSW Central Tablelands, during the winter you can get snowfalls as it is situated at an elevation of 1,113 m. In the summer, there is a mild to warm climate, making it an interesting escape from the hotter weather in the lowlands.

Things to Do

A variety of great rural experiences are on hand with the region, including finding truffles, horse riding and walks that explore the natural surroundings. There is a good variety of accommodation available as well, from camp sites and caravan parks with facilities to luxury digs, whether in town or in the surroundings.

Within the town, visit the Oberon Military Museum for a fascinating insight into the military conflicts that Australia fought in, including the Boer War, WWI and WWII. This includes people that served from the local area, as well as photos, medals and other artefacts from the conflicts. Located just opposite the Oberon RSL Club, there are picnic tables in the memorial garden. Phone 0438 6156 53 for more information.

Another local attraction in Oberon is Oberon Farmers Markets on the first Saturday of every month. Located at the St. Barnabas Church grounds from 8.30am in the morning. Pick up some of the locally made jams and preserves, or the freshest of produce.

Lake Oberon

Lake Oberon is known for its great fishing. Fly fishing Trout is the favourite local catch here, both brown and rainbow, up to 30 to 55cm. Other attractions here is boatin and sailing (One day a month, on the sailing club day) and bird watching.

Rockley

Rockley, a nearby town also located in the Central Tablelands. There are numerous heritage buildings here, making it a place well worth a visit

The art gallery, Rockley Studio, is also located here. Owned and operated by the artist Tim Miller, there are etchings, oil paintings and drawings in pastels and watercolours. They include landscapes and more modern works, classes are available.
