Places to visit in the Central Tablelands include Cowra, Gulgong, Lithgow, Oberon, Portland and Wellington.

Cowra

Cowra was the site of a POW camp for Japanese prisoners, their breakout during WWII was the largest in military history. Nearby, there are wineries to explore in the surrounds and hot air ballooning experiences. In the town, visit the Cowra War Museum, the Japanese Garden, the Age of Fishes Museum and the Cowra Regional Art Gallery: Cowra NSW.

Gulgong

Born during the Gold Rush years, Gulgong today has over a hundred building registered with the historic National Trust. The Gulgong Pioneer Museum boasts an excellent collection of Australiana, including horse drawn carriages and Aboriginal artefacts. Every year the town also hosts the grande Gulgong Folk Festival: Gulgong.

Lithgow

The town of Lithgow in the Blue Mountains was and still is an important gateway to the Central West: Lithgow.

Oberon

Near the mysterious Jenolan Caves, Oberon is a commercial centre for the rural surrounding producers of beef, lamb and vegetables. Also in the surrounds are the World Heritage Blue Mountains and the Kanagra-Boyd. Activities to enjoy here include camping, trout fishing and exploring the mountains and valleys, either on foot or mountain bikes.

Oberon NSW

Portland

Part of the gateway from Sydney to the Central West, historically it is a mining town and actually got its name from the cement process that became its biggest manufacturing product, ’The town that built Sydney’.

Wellington

Set in the valley of the same name, the town is on the junction of the Macquarie and Bell Rivers. Explore the many waterways and lakes, the Wellington Caves or visit the Oxley Museum and the Burrendong Arboretum and Botanic Gardens. Wellington.
