Manly, a Sydney beachside suburb continues to attract visitors to its sandy shores, both on the harbour and on the ocean. A short ferry ride from the city will get you here from Circular Quay at the foot of the city.
Manly is also the first of the Northern Beaches Suburbs of Sydney. Just north of here, there are beaches of all sizes, with surf and wide scenic vistas. Most of them have Surf Life Saving Clubs, there for your safety while swimming, open during the warmer months and public holidays.
Places to Eat
Along the beachfront and on the Corso, which leads to the ocean beach from the ferry wharf, has some great places to eat, including excellent restaurants. There is also a growing collection of bars, pubs and other eateries offering a wide selection of foods, from Australian seafood and steaks, to African and Thai.
Manly has a wide selection of places to stay, from budget backpacker hostels, to luxury apartments and world class hotels. It is seen as a convenient place for exploring Sydney, as there are regular ferry and jetcat services to and from the city, as well as late night buses.

If you opted to stay in the city or near environs, Manly still provides a great day out. If you haven’t been before, hop on a ferry from the city for some stunning views of Sydney Harbour before you get here. When you do, enjoy a walk along the beachfront, go for a swim or surf at one of the beaches located here, have a meal and sample a great Aussie wine or beer at one the bars or pubs.
As was mentioned earlier, Manly is the beginning of the Sydney Northern Beach Suburbs. If you have the time, explore them as you can find beaches here with fantastic scenery, great surf or places to swim or just laze about.Many have picnic or BBQ facilities, as well as playgrounds for the kids.
You can even try your hand at surfing, there are two surfing schools located here. Just going for a weekend walk is completely enjoyable here too, head south from the beachfront to walk to gorgeous Shelly Beach, or just head northwards along the beachfront under Manly’s famous Norfolk Pine Trees.
If your driving, head up to the Sydney Harbour National Park on North Head. Here you can find truly stunning views of Sydney Harbour and the gap between North and South Heads, where the ocean meets the harbour. Usually there are oodles of yachts and water craft enjoying the sunny day. Look out to sea, where you may sight whale or dolphin pods on their migratory journeys.
