Derwent River Tasmania

Tasmania Australia map showing the surrounds of Hobart and nearby national parks: Tasmania Australia Map.

The Derwent River, located just north of the city of Hobart has been occupied by Aboriginals at least as long ago as the last ice age, when there was a land bridge between mainland Australia and the island of Tasmania. Thick forests covered its shores, some of which still remains in small pockets.

A number of dams have been built upstream over the years to utilise the hydropower energy of the river.

Althought still beautiful, pollutants from industries further up the river in the 19th century and early 20th century have made eating fish and shellfish from here risky. Heavy metal contamination in sediments apparently remain.
