Glebe Sydney Australia

Map of Sydney Center South

Glebe has developed into an eclectic Sydney suburb - close to the city centre but quite different. Here, picket fenced cottages, some very old are mixed with 2 to 3 storey terrraces and mansions dating from the early to the late 19th Century.

These buildings reflect Glebe’s history as it had become popular as an easy to get to suburb away from the inner city CBD, both for workers and the well to do, then declined with the advance of trains.

The expanding train system allowed people to live further and further away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Motorcars from the 1920s and 30s onwards sped up that process.

Glebe Today

Today, Glebe is popular with university students, as well as upwardly mobile and established professionals. Essentially anyone wishing a way of life that blends a leafy suburban lifestyle with the adrenalin of being so conveniently close to the center of activity and nightlife, the inner city.

Being close to Sydney University and now the University of Technology ensured this inner city suburb has had more than its share of activists, Bohemians, Beatniks, Hippies, writers and artists. It still has, although the names may be different - Punks, Rockers and Emos replacing the earlier movements.

Restaurants

With its gradual transition, Glebe has acquired a collection of great restaurants and other places to eat:

Writers and Artists

Writers and artists still favour the place, there are plenty of studios for dance, music and painting here today.

The Glebe Vallhalla Arts Cinema, built during the Art Deco period, has now closed as a cinema. Well known to Sydney uni students and movie afficiendos it showed independent movies in the 80s and 90s, as well as classics from earlier days. It had a short stint as a live theatre in the 70s, the first Rocky Horror Shows were held here. Now redeveloped, it is occupied by studios but the exterior remains

It is also popular with overseas and Australian visitors to Sydney as a place to stay while here. You can find a good choice in the mix of cheaper accommodation available here, including backpacker hostels and bargain hotels.

Frequent buses and taxis run along the main streets, particularly Glebe Point Road, that can get you to the city quickly, except maybe at the peak of rush hour. Even then, it does not take you long.

Glebe Restaurants

Some very good restaurants as well as cheaper eateries have sprung up to service the locals as well as many visitors - people also come from the city and outer suburbs just to dine here.

There is an excellent little bakery on the corner of Glebe Point and Pyrmont Bridge Roads - serving things like piping hot savoury sausage rolls with a flaky crust as well as a variety of other tasty baked goods.

The range of cheap eats, particularly for breakfast and lunch, makes Glebe actually an interesting place to start your day for exploring Sydney. Breakfast in Glebe, lunch at Darling Harbour and then the nightlife of the city.

Glebe Markets and Shopping

The many art galleries, bookstores, music shops as well the ever popular Glebe markets make for an interesting afternoon browsing and looking for bargains.

Glebe Markets are held every Saturday with live music through the day. Here, upcoming clothes designers and artists sell their latest creations. You can also find bargains in bric-a-brac and crafts and some funky souvenirs.

Bicentennial Park

The far end of Glebe Point Rd has Bicentennial Park, with playing fields, a skateboard ramp, playground and barbecue facilities for the family to enjoy.

On the same street in November there is the Glebe Street Fair, with delish food, live entertainment and stalls offering all kinds of goodies.

How to Get to Glebe

Getting to Glebe is easy from the city. You can catch buses 431 to 434 from Circular Quay at the foot of the city, which run regularly. The Light Rail from Central Railway runs from Central Station to both the Sydney Casino and further along the route, the Sydney Fish Markets.

Glebe actually begins at the Fish Markets (great place for a very fresh seafood lunch), but you can continue further to Bridge Rd. For Glebe Point Rd, get off at Jubilee Station.
