Exploring The Rocks

One of the oldest places to explore in Sydney is the area known as The Rocks. Opposite the cove from where the Sydney Opera House stands, The Rocks is where the first convicts were settled upon the arrival of the colonists to New South Wales from England.

Since essentially the first arrivals were convicts and their guards, the first places of abode built here were simple mud and stick huts, but quickly gave way to the old windy streets, historic warehouses and places of business that supported the earliest growth of the colony, from the late 18th Century to the middle of the 19th.

Today, those streets and many of those buildings are still extant. Now a restored historical district, at The Rocks there are art galleries, historic walks, old homes and a growing collection of bars, entertainment and restaurants. Explore The Rocks:

Royal Botanic Garden

Located behind and alongside of the Sydney Opera House is the Royal Botanic Garden. Originally the site where a farm was established to grow food for the colony, it quickly proved inadequate for the colony’s needs. Due to the poor soil there at the time, it was unable to produce any real sustenance.

When the cows and bull that were brought here from England to start a cattle and dairy industry escaped from here, it was the final straw. New land was sought for the farm, which was found up the main river that feeds Sydney Harbour (Parramatta River). The fertile soils found there proved more than adequate and all farming was moved there. Incidentally, the cow herd that escaped with its bull was found many years later in the south west of Sydney, having grown much larger.

The Royal Botanic Garden was established upon the abandoned farm to research Australian plants and as well imported ones:
