Sydney Australia Places to Visit Map

Though a whole lot more than a museum, the artworks here alone make it a worthwhile place to visit, not only for overseas visitors but Australians as well. Its in-depth collections of works of national importance only add to its attraction. Functioning not only as the state library, it is well worth visiting.

Through the use of displays, photos, talks, tours and featured events, the library works to keep Sydneyés and Australia’s stories alive. If you are lucky enough to be able to visit here, you will find yourself a bit wiser and with a memorable experience.

Cultural Heritage

The Mitchell Library in Sydney, opened in 1910, holds Australia’s greatest collection of cultural heritage, particularly in Australian history, culture and literature. Other topics include Society, Arts, Natural History and Culture as well as People and Places.

The building was designed to hold the Australiana collections from a bequest by David S. Mitchell. Amongst its catalogue it has the original journal of James Cook, as well as Abel Tasman and Matthew Flinders.

Matthew Flinders

Matthew Flinders was the first to circumnavigate the Australian continent and first to describe the many Aboriginals that he met along the way as ’Australians’.
