The Art Gallery of South Australia first opened in 1881 and since then has played an important role in the encouragement, preservation, maintenance and collection of art of not only the state but the country. Exhibitions of Australian art are extensive and change on a regular basis.
Occupying the present building on North Terrace since 1900.
With a collection of over 38,000 works of art, not only from the ancient world of the Greeks and Romans, but from Egypt and other civilizations. However, more importantly, it has substantial collections of Indigenous and early Australian art.
The gallery is open daily from ten to five. There are ongoing and changing exhibitions from all over the world but also contemporary Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal works.
Tours of the museum are held daily, at 11am and at 2pm. There are also lunchtime and weekender talks about the art on exhibit.
The temporary exhibitions also usually have tours that you can take, but admission fees may apply. Tuesdays also sees a tour held by either a curator, artist or expert for special insights at 12.30pm.
