The Gold Rushes of the mid 19th Century helped of course, as did the wealth from sheep and wool. People came from all over New South Wales to shop here, as they still do here today.

History
The QVB was completed in 1898, being built to replace a vegetable market that stood on the site and was designed by George McRae, the then Government Architect of NSW. Restored to its former glory, it reopened its doors in 1986, being constantly improved since then for the benefit of shoppers while keeping to the original vision for the building.
The Queen Victoria Building in the Sydney Centre is of a Romanesque design building that has been restored and is now a shopping centre.
