Australian Sharks

Australian sharks come in all sizes, including the giant whale shark which survives on plankton. More of a whale than a shark, they have a similar physiology to sharks, yet are filter feeders like many whales.

Great White

The Great White is a real shark, are predators and can get very large in size, while other sharks only reach a length of up to 25 centimetres. They, unlike whales, use gills to extract oxygen from water on the right and left side of their heads. Some of them can swim in fresh water.

Some sharks are dangerous, such as the Great White, Bull Shark and the Tiger Shark, but normally do not attack humans, but sometimes mistake us for seals, dolphins or similar animals. That being said, it is probably unwise to trust any shark with rows of pointed teeth when swimming, better to play safe if seen.

Seeing Great White Sharks

You can see Great White Sharks at the Neptune Islands with Calypso Dive Charters, an eco certified operator, using shark cages. The only place in Australia where you can do this, you can bet it’s an adrenaline pumping experience.
