Perth Points of Interest
You will find most of the attractions to visit near or on the banks of the Swan River. Perth points of interest include the Swan Bell Tower, found on the Barrack St. Jetty. Another is King’s Park, spread over a thousand acres with a Botanic Garden, and the SciTech Centre, a hands on museum with plenty of activities and exhibits.
Perth Mint
All that glitters is Gold at the Perth Mint, you can see gold being poured into ingot moulds. They have lots of it on display, including Australia’s largest collection of nuggets, but no free samples. You can also see the world’s largest Gold Bar exhibition.
A shangri-la for coin collectors, the Perth Mint makes platinum, silver and gold coins. With the modern technology used at the mint, their proof coins are absolutely stunning, including a 10 kilo Australian Kookaburra coin made from pure silver. Your not likely to find that in your spare change anytime soon.
Getting Around Perth
Getting around the Perth CBD is easy, due to its compact size. Walking to most places of interest is quite possible and a good way to explore. There is free public transport available in the central area.
Transperth (Phone 13 62 13) operates Perth’s public transport network, which is comprised of buses, ferries and trains. This is a good value way to get around the further parts of the city.
They have made it is easy to board a bus, a train, or a ferry to get to just about any part of the city or the surrounding towns in minutes. Fremantle is a popular beachside resort city not far from Perth, as is a visit to Rottnest Island.
Perth Shopping
St George’s Terrace is the main road through the inner city. Alongside this street, are the streets of Hay and Murray. Here you will find plenty of opportunities for shopping in the arcades, including fashion, accessories and jewelry. A chance to get hold of some of that shiny Western Australia gold and ancient Australian Opals.
Hint: when buying Opal, purchase only solid Opals. Some tourist places will sell what is termed in the industry as doublets or triplets. These stones are layered with a glass top and the thinnest of veneers of opal below. These manufactured stones have no investment value. Most women know this, most men do not.
