Margaret River, as many Australians already know, is a premier Australian wine growing region and has the cuisine to match.

Margaret River Wineries

There are many wineries here of growing fame, including those offering gourmet dining, tours and accommodation. Many of them offer tastings as well and have cellar door sales.

Flametree Wines has been a recent winner of the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy, for the best one-year-old dry red at the 2008 Melbourne Wine Show. The Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy is awarded yearly for the best wines produced in Australia.

Town and Surrounds

Within the town and nearby surrounds, there are a number of artisans galleries, a growing collection of restaurants and a host of select wineries to visit. There are some excellent ‘Food Experiences’ on offer, everything from tasty fudge to first class dining restaurants.

Natural attractions found in the region include ancient limestone caves, grand national parks with tall deep forests, vast coastal wilderness with rugged scenery and native wildlife.

Surf Beaches

But Margaret River is also close to surfing beaches, some suitable for swimming as well. The beaches are stunning and wild, pounded by the waves created by the wiles of the Great Southern Ocean from the south and the vast cyclones, during their season in the north.

There are fascinating limestone caves to explore in the region. There are 360 of them, Mammoth Cave has a fossil of a giant wombat ancestor, you can visit others, although not all are suitable for exploring.

At Jewel Cave you can see some really amazing ancient formations and a fossil of a possum, while at Calgarup Cave and Giant Cave, you can explore on your own, bring strong shoes and older clothes.


You can spot wildlife in the many parks and coastal wilderness areas, some unique to the area. Kangaroos, possums and dunnarts inhabit the region, as well varied birdlife, including wedge tailed eagles.

Margaret River Food & Wine Trail

There are over eighty wineries located here, including Moss Brothers, Peacetree Estate and Thompson Estate. Many of them have cellar doors where you can try and buy samples, some of the wineries even have gourmet restaurants with extensive wine lists.

If wine is your thing, you can visit the Margaret River Regional Wine Centre, located at 9 Bussell Highway, Cowaramup. They showcase locally produced wines, so you can pick a mixed case or two at your leisure. Phone +61 8 9755 5501.

Margaret River Museum

The Margaret River Museum details the life of the workers from the Group Settlement Scheme. Set on 12 hectares of bushland, is the Heritage Raptor Wildlife Centre with numerous types of birds of prey, they also have eagle flying displays.

Margaret River Visitors Centre
