Mittagong, gateway to the Southern Highlands is a smallish town surrounded by the greenery of the semi-tropical rainforest. A short drive south east from Sydney, it has become a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Mittagong has acquired a good collection of restaurants and pleasant places to eat over the last twenty years. Not only that, but the nearby towns of Bowral and Moss Vale have also.
With its elevation being up from the city as well, at 635 metres, it tends to be cooler in summer. Ample rainfalls during most years make it greener as well. The nearby towns of Bowral and Moss Vale have similar attributes, as well, they are interesting side drives for a trip to Canberra or the South Coast of NSW.
At its elevation, Mittagong is surrounded by three mountain reserves, with scenic and photogenic lookouts to match. You can find them at Mount Gibraltar, Mount and Gibbergunyah Reserves.
Nearby Lake Alexandra Reserve is accessible from Queen Street off the old Hume Highway in town. Although man-made as a water supply for the region, is popular with both visitors and locals for walks, picnics and BBQs on warm summer days.

The Southern Highlands are located in the Great Dividing Range of Australia, a series of mountain ranges that divides the east coast of Australia from the its center. Stretching from the south of Victoria to Queensland, it is the result of geological actions over the millenia, beginning some 300 million years ago when the continent of South America had pressed against Australia.
